British Columbia
Well what can we say in such a short time. This is a fabulous part of the world. We are just about to leave Vernon, where we have been staying on a great site with views over the lake. We watched a deer feeding while getting breakfast together this morning.
We’ve just been looking at Vernon’s community murals which are very good and politically right on, both from what they show and the way that they are part of a community project for the young people who paint them under the guidance of a resident muralist.
The most amazing thing so far has been the desert area around Osoyoos. We had a guided tour at an interpretation centre and walked on a boardwalk - this avoids damage to the ecology which would take 100 years to regenerate. It is called antelope brush and is a beautiful blue grey. Alongside it is reclaimed land watered constantly to give a vast range of fruits and vegetables as well as vineyards. We are very impressed by BC’s wines and fruit.
Everyone is incredibly friendly and last night we sat talking by a campfire talking to a young couple from Calgary. Every one who asks where you come from has close relatives somewhere in the british Isles. They had Belfast connections.
We are now moving further north and east and will probably be on more basic sites and further away from stores.
More about camping later but here is:
Today’s camping tip - #1 in an occasional series.
When you have finished your gin and tonic save the lime - this is really good at breaking down the fat in your frying pan and the shampoo works more effectively.
