   We went to see it in Sheffield on Friday. A great film, and it’s really made waves over here.

   It isn’t set in Grimsby, though several scenes (including the climactic scene at the very end) are filmed at the North Wall harbour. But the locations are spread amongst a variety of different northern towns. The actors all have different regional accents—a Grimbarian, a Scouser, a Lancastrian etc.

   So in fact it isn’t “set” anywhere in particular: it’s in a generic north that could be nowhere or anywhere. It was great to suddenly recognise Ross House (the Youngs offices on the fish docks) in the background—I didn’t know anything about the Grimsby connection until after I’d seen it, so it came as a bit of a shock.

   I saw it last night–fantastic. It’s so great to hear a Grimsby accent on the big screen, if nothing else. And the story, although in parts slightly unbelievable–would a skinhead really not approve of the Faulklands war just after he’s done a spiel about how great fighting for your country is?– really good on the good/bad, fashion versus racism skin-head dynamic.

   Karl Turgoose went to my school, almost certainly a relative of the young ‘Tommo’ due to those deep set eyes and fluffy ginger hair.

   Nice to see some good shots of the Grimsby/Meggies border at the end. I was probably the only one in the cinema to spot the irony of two on-screen Grimbarians saying that Cleethorpes was the ‘best holiday ever.’

   ps, How do you do an ‘em-dash’ on this? I did two hyphens and it has turned them all into single hyphens!

   Jude—you can (nearly) always type an em-dash in Windows by holding down your alt key and typing 0151 on the numerical keypad at the right of your keyboard. You have to have Number Lock on for this to work.

   Obviously computers are at best blunt tools for writing texts until they have a dedicated em-dash key. Surely one of the “what the hell is that” keys such as SYSRQ, SCROLL LOCK or PAUSE BREAK, or one of the “haha you accidentally pressed me so now I’m going to screw up your work” keys (INS, CAPS LOCK) could be sacrificed to make way for this vitally important character.
